When Is Flag Football Season? League Start Dates & What to Expect
When is flag football season? A coach-to-coach guide to youth, high school, and adult flag football season timing across spring, summer, and fall.
If you think flag football is just a fall sport, think again. The flag football season now runs nearly year-round, and 2026 is the busiest the sport has ever been: girls flag is sanctioned as a varsity sport in more than a dozen states, LA28 will be the first Olympics with flag football on the medal stand, and NFL FLAG keeps adding leagues every quarter. Whether you coach a club, run an athletic department, or just signed your kid up for a rec team, knowing when your league starts is how you stay ahead of registration, rosters, and uniforms.
When Does Flag Football Season Start?
Most flag football leagues run 6-12 weeks including a short pre-season, a regular schedule of weekly games, and playoffs. The season you play depends on the program, the age group, and your state. Here’s how it breaks down.
Youth Flag Football Season
Youth flag football season runs in two main waves: a fall season (August to November) and a spring season (March to June), with summer and winter leagues filling the gaps in warmer climates and indoor facilities.
- NFL FLAG: The official NFL-sponsored program runs leagues for ages 5-17 in every season. Most local NFL FLAG leagues operate either fall or spring, but in major metros you can find a league running every quarter of the year.
- Pop Warner & i9 Sports: Both run fall and spring seasons, with i9 also offering summer leagues in many regions.
- YMCA & Upward Sports: Fall and spring are the primary seasons, with some Ys running short summer clinics.
- Rec centers and indoor facilities: Winter indoor leagues are the catch-all when outdoor play stops, especially in the Northeast and Midwest.
What to expect: 6-8 week regular season, one game per week, plus a single-elimination playoff. Registration windows usually open 6-8 weeks before the first game, and popular leagues fill in days. Tip: register the moment your league opens, then circle back for uniforms and equipment as soon as your roster is set.
High School Flag Football Season
High school flag football season is where the sport is growing fastest, and the timing depends entirely on the state.
Girls flag football is now varsity-sanctioned in more than a dozen states as of 2026. Most are spring states (Florida, Georgia, Alabama, and California play February through May), but some run it in the fall (New York, Arizona, and Nevada). A few states are still in pilot phase and run shorter seasons. Boys flag at the high school level is rarer but mostly fall when it exists.
What to expect: a 10-12 week season with practice starting roughly 3 weeks before the first game, district play, and a state tournament. Registration is handled through the athletic department, not the player.
Tip: ADs and head coaches should lock in uniforms 4-6 weeks before the season opener. Custom team uniforms with numbers, names, and any sponsor decoration take roughly that long from approved design to delivered jerseys, and that window shrinks fast once the season starts.
College Flag Football
Women’s college flag football has exploded since the NAIA sanctioned it as a varsity sport. Most NAIA and intramural college programs play in the spring, February through April, with conference tournaments in late April and a national championship in May.
Spring vs Fall Flag Football
For adults, club, and rec leagues, the spring flag football season (March-June) and fall flag football season (August-November) are the two anchor windows. Spring leagues skew younger and more developmental. Fall leagues skew competitive, partly because they overlap with tackle football season and pull in players who want a faster game.
Recreational & Adult Leagues
Adult and corporate flag football leagues run in every season, but spring and fall are where the deepest brackets and best competition show up. Summer leagues are popular in cooler regions; winter leagues move indoors almost everywhere else.
What to expect: 8-10 week seasons, weekly games, single or double elimination playoffs. Most adult leagues are co-ed or split into men’s and women’s divisions. Tip: register as a full team rather than as a free agent if you can — captains get the better time slots.
Plan Your Season Backwards From Game 1
The biggest mistake coaches make is treating uniforms and gear as a last-minute item. Here’s the realistic timeline for a custom team uniform order:
- 8 weeks out: roster locked, head count confirmed, sizes collected.
- 6 weeks out: design approved, order placed.
- 4 weeks out: production and decoration.
- 2 weeks out: shipping and last-minute size swaps.
- Game 1: jerseys on the field.
Stock blank jerseys ship faster, but if you want custom names, numbers, or sponsor logos, the 4-6 week window is the realistic floor. Whatever your league timing, work backwards from your first game.
